One of These Days by Tom Grant

One of These Days. Well, lagu jazzy yang melambungkan ingatanku pada puluhan tahun lalu, saat aku masih remaja dan duduk di bangku SMAN 4 Bandung (is anybody here went to that school,too ? awesome memories, huh ? ). Lagu yang bisa menyemangatiku saat perasaanku sedang moody. Saat malas belajar dan mengerjakan setumpuk PR Matematika dan Fisika, saat malas beraktifitas di Minggu pagi, selain menonton televisi acara " Little House on the Prairie ". Oh My ... berapa abad yang lalu itu semua yaa ...

Di malam-malam yang sunyi, jika perasaanku malah jadi mellow saat mendengarkan lagu-lagu romantis kesukaanku, aku ganti kasetnya  (hallaahh kaset ... ) dengan kaset Tom Grant, dan menggemalah One of these days di seantero ruangan tempatku belajar, memantul ke langit-langit kamar, lalu  mengusir rasa malasku. Kini, lagu ini menjadi lagu jadul yang keren dan tidak kunjung terdengar norak, meski bertahun telah berlalu sejak lagu ini dirilis 1985 lalu.

Tom Grant was born in Portland, Oregon a musical family – his father was a tap dancer who owned a record store in Portland, and his brother was an avant-garde jazz pianist. At a young age, Grant learned to play piano and drums. After graduating from the University of Oregon, he traveled to New York City in 1970 with Native American saxophonist Jim Pepper. This led to Grant touring and recording with jazz greats Woody Shaw,  Charles Lloyd, and Tony Williams.

In 1976, Grant cut his first solo record for Timeless and in 1979 he formed his own band. Beginning in 1983, Tom Grant started recording a series of jazz-influenced pop albums that have variously been called "New Adult Contemporary, "Quiet Storm",  "Contemporary Jazz" and "SMooth Jazz",  each have been best-sellers in the "lite jazz" market.
